What happens after I purchase?

Do I need specialized tools?
No! You can build the entire structure with a table saw (or circular saw), miter saw, and a drill. We designed it around standard lumber found at any hardware store.
Can I use this for commercial builds?
Yes! The Thiosphere™ is Open Source under the CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license. You are free to modify, manufacture, and sell units based on this design.
Is the material list accurate for 2026 prices?
We estimate ~$500 for the core structural lumber. Plywood/sheathing costs vary by region. The handbook includes a dynamic calculator link to check current local prices.
How long does it take to build?
Most builders complete a single Thiosphere module in 2-4 weekends. The handbook breaks the build into clear phases so you can work at your own pace. Some experienced builders have finished in a single long weekend.
Do I need a building permit?
It depends on your local jurisdiction. In many areas, structures under 120 sq ft (roughly the footprint of a standard Thiosphere) do not require a permit. The handbook includes a section on zoning considerations to help you check your local requirements.
What skill level do I need?
Intermediate DIY. If you can measure, cut a straight line, and drive a screw, you can build this. Every cut is dimensioned. Every assembly step has photos. The handbook was written for builders, not engineers.
